Nosferatu (2024)
Country: US/GB/HUN
Technical: col/1.66:1 132m
Director: Robert Eggers
Cast: Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Bill Skarsgård, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Simon McBurney Willem Dafoe
Synopsis:
A young girl is so responsive to her repressed base desires that she causes a centuries old vampire in the Transylvanian alps to sit up and take notice. Years later, it is her husband who is given the task of delivering the deeds to a more conveniently placed abode by his employer, but they are actually a covenant for the conveyance of his wife's soul.
Review:
This second remake of the Murnau classic is probably the most convincingly gothic horror film ever made. You really feel the struggle between good and evil as more than a vague notion, informing everything from language to art direction, from soundtrack to cinematography: the first conventionally lit colour shot of the two little girls comes as a shock. It is certainly hard to see how this could be improved upon, and for those looking for contemporary relevance one need only consider the dark web and the evil of fundamentalism.
