The Notebook (2004)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 123m
Director: Nick Cassavetes
Cast: Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, Gena Rowlands, Joan Allen, James Marsden

Synopsis:

In an attempt to bring back her memory, an elderly gentleman reads from a notebook the story of a young pair of lovers to a female resident of a care home. In flashback we witness the course of true love in the Deep South from either side of the tracks.

Review:

Dewy eyed romantic drama with affecting leads, and above all an impressive performance from a very young McAdams that turned a few heads at the time. There are attendant irritations, like the frankly incredible restoration of a southern plantation house by a young no-hoper almost singlehanded, and the somehow necessary contrivance of having his father pass on so that he is well and truly alone. Nevertheless, as an example of the kind of film we thought they didn't make any more, done with the unabashed candour of an era unconstrained by the Production Code, it is not without charm and passion.
