The Naked City (1948)
Country: US
Technical: bw 96m
Director: Jules Dassin
Cast: Barry Fitzgerald, Don Taylor, Howard Duff
Synopsis:
A murderer strikes on the streets of Manhattan, and as a police lieutenant sets to work we are privy to every step, however mundane, in his investigation.
Review:
Trend-setting location-shot thriller bookended by a dreadful Mark Hellinger commentary which has become a cliché and was inexplicably resurrected by Spike Lee for Summer of Sam. Nevertheless, this was cutting-edge realism at the time: the exhaustive detail and sense of place more than any acting style.
