(Des hommes et des dieux)

Country: FR
Technical: col/2.35:1 122m
Director: Xavier Beauvois
Cast: Lambert Wilson, Michel Lonsdale, Olivier Rabourdin

Synopsis:

During the Algerian civil war of the 1990s, eight Trappist monks persevere with their work in the community of a mountain village, in spite of threats from Islamist terrorists and the increasingly hostile demands of the authorities that they leave.

Review:

A reverent and contemplative film, full of close-up glimpses into the souls of the brothers. The scenes of worship and daily drudgery, while fascinating of themselves, are perhaps too oft-repeated, and there are not enough leavening moments of humour (Lonsdale) and threat to justify the great length. Of necessity partly cut off from the locals, the narrative does not extend to developing the few local characters and their stories that we are privileged to witness.
