On Chesil Beach (2017)
Country: GB
Technical: col/2.39:1 110m
Director: Dominic Cooke
Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Emily Watson, Billy Howle, Samuel West, Anne-Marie Duff
Synopsis:
A History graduate meets a violinist in the 1950s, but their wedding night is troubled by the shadow of a childhood trauma. Later, on the beach, a decision is taken which determines both their futures for good, but redemption comes at the eleventh hour.
Review:
Reliable McEwan adaptation with period trappings, but we have been here before, even with the same actress. Two strokes of subtlety raise the profile somewhat: the later to be revealed elision of the scene on the beach, and the discreetly brief revelation of the unspeakable truth that is never illuminated by dialogue.
