Lush, operatic filming of a melancholy classic of unconsummated love. All smouldering looks and decorative compositions, it manages to stay within the boundaries of tastefulness compared with the likes of Bernard Rose's Anna Karenina. Fiennes acts well of course; Tyler impresses. (A family affair: Magnus Fiennes composed the very discreet music, part Tchaikovsky, part gypsy.)
