Only Angels Have Wings (1939)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 121m
Director: Howard Hawks
Cast: Cary Grant, Jean Arthur, Rita Hayworth, Richard Barthelmess, Thomas Mitchell

Synopsis:

American fliers run mail across the Andes at considerable risk to life from bad weather and mountain birds.

Review:

Archetypal Hawks macho fest, with tough guys sticking their necks out and laughing in the face of death, while their women can either take it or get out. But then of course a Hawks heroine can always take it - just about - and Jean Arthur hovers and wavers until her man can more or less bring himself to ask her to stick around. As usual the more than average length is crammed with incident, humour and music, and the production values are pretty good. Those unused to old films may wonder at the way in which action highlights such as the crashing of condors into an aeroplane come totally unsignalled, a fact perhaps due in equal parts to shooting constraints and the pacing imperative of early sound films.
