Ossessione (1943)
Country: IT
Technical: bw 135m
Director: Luchino Visconti
Cast: Massimo Girotti, Clara Calamai, Elio Marcuzzo
Synopsis:
A drifter stops at a roadside cafe, gets himself employed, sleeps with the wife and before long is helping her do away with the husband.
Review:
Neo-realist (avant la lettre), unremittingly depressing version of The Postman Always Rings Twice, effectively set in the Po Valley. Happier to dwell on the sordid aspects of the story than Garnett's later film, it also introduces a new character, friend of the 'hero', who represents an openness to moral choices. Without doubt a key, and early, film in the change of aesthetic that had its roots in films like Renoir's Toni before the war, and a million miles from later Visconti.
