The Old Man & the Gun (2018)
Country: US/GB
Technical: col/2.35:1 93m
Director: David Lowery
Cast: Robert Redford, Sissy Spacek, Casey Affleck
Synopsis:
A septuagenarian recidivist bank robber meets a pretty widow and attracts the interest of a Dallas cop, who doesn’t really want to catch him.
Review:
This slight story, based on a true-life case, is ideal material for the continuously active star, who here delivers a portrayal of unfailing courtesy and good humour (lots of flashing of that smile). It’s a slight affair, with time divided between the gentle courtship with Spacek and the good-natured sparring with Affleck (both superb). However, one cannot watch without a pang of regret that our hero’s days in the saddle must be numbered, even if the closing shot sees him unable to relinquish his spurs.
