Péril en la demeure (1985)
(Death in a French Garden)
Country: FR
Technical: col 101m
Director: Michel Deville
Cast: Michel Piccoli, Nicole Garcia, Anémone, Christophe Malavoy, Richard Bohringer
Synopsis:
A musician is employed to teach the daughter of a wealthy couple guitar, but falls into a relationship with the wife which compromises him when murder ensues.
Review:
Playful French reworking of The Draughtsman's Contract - its export title echoing that of Greenaway's film (Meurtre dans un jardin anglais). Stylish and clever, the present work certainly does not add anything of value to the original: the artist is equally self-absorbed and embroiderings like the hitman and the woman next door merely add to the confusion which an unforgivably weak ending does little to dispel. However, an oft-naked Garcia and entrancingly unpredictable Piccoli mean that it is never dull, which Draughtsman on occasion is, and the technical credits are high.
