Piranha (2010)
Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 88m
Director: Alexandre Aja
Cast: Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, Richard Dreyfuss, Jerry O'Connell, Steven R. McQueen, Jessica Szohr, Kelly Brook, Eli Roth
Synopsis:
A seismic rift opens up a passageway from a prehistoric underground lake to its surface counterpart, through which surge the ancestors of piranha fish to feast on the wanton youth of a Colorado summer resort.
Review:
Feisty, affectless remake of a jokily irreverent original, which changes the premise of the thing, offers some in-jokes (Dreyfuss singing 'Show me the way to go home' in his boat), plentiful T and A, absurdist gross-out effects and frat humour (Jerry O'Connell as a porn producer so high on coke and tequila he couldn't direct a snuff movie). Aja's red-blooded mise en scène must have shaken even hardened Stateside thrill-seekers, but otherwise has little to show for its undoubtedly superior effects and is somewhat of a comedown after the promise of Haute tension.
