A Scanner Darkly (2006)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: Technicolor 100m
Director: Richard Linklater
Cast: Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Woody Harrelson, Robert Downey Jnr

Synopsis:

In an L.A. of the future a neurologically harmful narcotic, known as Substance D, is part of many people's lives. An agent for an organisation ostensibly fighting to stem its proliferation wears a 'scramble suit' at work that renders him unrecognisable, but at home spies on his housemates, and even himself. Meanwhile his employers covertly programme him to be ready to be a future farmer of the flower which is itself the source of the drug.

Review:

Complex and confusing, and not a little imbued with the junkie's paranoia, this strangely powerful film is animated through 'rotoscoping' so that the live actors appear as shiftingly recognisable cartoon figures.
