A Serious Man (2009)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 109m
Director: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
Cast: Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Kind, Fred Melamed, Sari Lennick,

Synopsis:

A professor of Mathematics in Minnesota belongs to a fairly tight-knit Jewish community and in short order is treated to a succession of setbacks which make him question what it is God is trying to say to him. Could it be that his line is cursed?

Review:

Either that or the prologue is just one in a catalogue of Jewish jokes, which even contain homages to Woody Allen (an elk on the roof of a car) and the Godfather (an irksome brother shot in a boat on a lake). The film showcases the Coens' unerring sense for ethnically inflected dialogue but is much less of a narrative than their recent films; a return to the Barton Fink days then, and none the worse for that.
