A Star Is Born (1954)
Country: US
Technical: col/2.55:1 154m
Director: George Cukor
Cast: Judy Garland, James Mason, Charles Bickford, Jack Carson
Synopsis:
A seasoned alcoholic actor takes a talented young starlet under his wing, and her career takes off as his enters a downward spiral.
Review:
Remake of the 1937 Selznick picture, with more emphasis on music to suit the star and MGM's stock in trade at the time. Both Mason and Garland are excellent, and Cukor, who directed Constance Bennett in the original What Price Hollywood?, is a better choice of director than Wellman. The musical numbers, however, pad it out to over two and a half hours, which the story is at pains to sustain.
