A Star Is Born (2018)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.39:1 136m
Director: Bradley Cooper
Cast: Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Sam Elliott, Rafi Gavron

Synopsis:

A boozed-up rock and blues legend pulls up at a drag bar for a drink and meets amateur singer Ally, whom he easily turns into a sensation by giving her space in his act. But as the music business machinery commandeers and commercialises her, so his self-destructive spiral gets worse.

Review:

This third remake of Wellman's 1937 version only goes to show that you can't keep a good story down. The blend of doomed love story and comment on today's over-packaged music industry are irresistible, even if the film never quite matches up to the first hour with its extended meet cute and live performance highs. Cooper and Gaga write and sing their own songs, which aren't half bad, though you will need captions for the dialogue. However, it is Cooper's fresh take on the material - about artistic honesty - that really sets this one apart and appears to have galvanised relationships behind the camera, too.
