Using American actors in a way that would become commonplace over the coming decade, he also shows an indebtedness to Chaplin in championing the underdog, though the action is harsher, laughter constantly threatened by brutishness and exploitation. Foreign language films had arrived, and the title, as would often be the case in Fellini's work, did not even merit a translation.
