Sahara (2005)
Country: GB/FR/GER/SP/US
Technical: col/2.35:1 124m
Director: Breck Eisner
Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Penélope Cruz, Steve Zahn, Lambert Wilson, William H. Macy
Synopsis:
Former Navy SEALs turned underwater salvage experts in Nigeria take time out to hunt for a Confederate ironclad in the Niger River, and find their paths cross with that of a WHO doctor looking for the source of a disease affecting villagers in Mali.
Review:
Sub(-Saharan) Indiana Jones thick ear with Gable-Tracy-Loy chemistry. The expected clash between mercenary and philanthropic motives never even materialises, as the scenario resolves itself into a series of chases-cum-rescues, and it is strictly second unit stuff all the way. That said, if it is drama-free froth you want, you could do a lot worse than spend a couple of hours with this cast in Moroccan locations and consider how, for a plot that depends on poisoned water, you could spend days running around in the Sahara desert without so much as a drop.
