Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col/2.35:1 107m
Director: Lasse Hallström
Cast: Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, Amr Waked, Kristin Scott Thomas

Synopsis:

When a Yemeni sheikh conceives the unlikely scheme of exporting Scottish salmon to a wadi project in his own country, it is the start of a life-changing working relationship for his PR assistant and the civil servant she calls on to help her.

Review:

A potty sounding project that is actually only cringe-making when Scott Thomas's Press Officer is on screen, this heartwarming whimsy comes from the director of The Shipping News, and one can see what drew him to it, though the lack of American involvement may account for greater success this time; that, and the contribution of the writer of The Full Monty. It thus recalls the Ealing comedies more than ersatz romantic fluff, but also has the winning ingredients of A Good Year: the embrace of a fantastic, uncommercial ideal that brings together two hearts who would otherwise have seemed incompatible. The plot takes some turns that are as hard to swallow as a Woolly Jones (the McGregor character's famous fishing fly), but star quality and a witty if formulaic script make it watchable.
