Saloon Bar (1940)
Country: GB
Technical: bw 76m
Director: Walter Forde
Cast: Gordon Harker, Elizabeth Allan, Mervyn Johns
Synopsis:
In an English pub, with the landlord's wife expecting any minute, a bookie and other locals go over the facts in the case of a former regular due to be hanged in the morning.
Review:
Harker may be a competent enough character actor, but he does not have the stature or appeal to carry a film single-handed, especially one with the serious vein of this Ealing drama. Nevertheless, even if we all now know that the publican's wife is going to give birth in the final frames, it is a fairly well written piece of comedy whodunnit and passes the time agreeably.
