Se7en (1995)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 127m
Director: David Fincher
Cast: Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey
Synopsis:
A young detective procures a transfer to the big city and finds himself teamed up with another on the brink of retirement, investigating a series of gruesome murders associated with the seven deadly sins.
Review:
Filmed in near darkness and driving rain, the city here clearly parallels Dante's seven circles of Hell, with the hero led grimacing to his own damnation. It is a shrewdly calculated mix of erudition and infernal imagination to match anything in Bosch, and it proved one of the most persuasive 'fin de siècle' statements the cinema had to make. A commercial success, it led to imitators: Copycat and the less distinguished Kiss the Girls. Freeman is outstanding, Pitt often unintelligible.
