Several Days in the Life of I.I. Oblomov (1979)

(Ne Skolko dnei iz zhizni I.I. Oblomova)

Country: USSR
Technical: col 143m
Director: Nikita Mikhalkov
Cast: Oleg Tabakov, Yuri Bogatyryov, Yelena Solovey

Synopsis:

A redundant member of the Russian ruling class (neither soldier nor statesman, therefore) idles away his existence dozing in bed or lounging at his rural dacha.

Review:

An ambitious attempt to film a most uncinematic novel, but Mikhalkov films with a freedom and oneiric quality that are wholly rewarding. Part 2, in the country, works best, and the beautiful cinematography and use of music, together with moving performances from the prinicipals, afford glimpses of the sublime even though the overall point is unclear.
