Shadows and Fog (1991)
Country: US
Technical: bw 86m
Director: Woody Allen
Cast: Woody Allen, Mia Farrow, John Malkovich, John Cusack, Madonna, Donald Pleasence, Lily Tomlin, Cathy Bates, Jodie Foster
Synopsis:
In an unidentified city, probably during the thirties, a spineless clerk is selected as decoy and scapegoat by vigilante gangs hunting a serial killer. His story and that of a couple of circus artistes are gradually intertwined.
Review:
Allen's homage to Kafka, Weill, Lang and Bergman's The Seventh Seal is an understandably cluttered affair which toys with the theme of the Jew chosen as scapegoat for society's ills, and half-heartedly throws in some old ones about the non-existence of God and the place of sex in the scheme of things. Visually - and aurally - it is a stunning recreation of a period of German cinema, but the material is for the most part very tired, and the host of stars with little to do seems more than ever a ploy to distract from the star's overwrought mannerisms.
