Shaft (1971)
Country: US
Technical: Metrocolor 100m
Director: Gordon Parks
Cast: Richard Roundtree, Moses Gunn, Charles Cioffi
Synopsis:
A Harlem underworld figure hires black private eye, John Shaft, to track down his daughter, who has been kidnapped by Mafia interlopers.
Review:
Phenomenally successful low-budget, semi-Independent cops and robbers; it gave the negro audience a Bond-like hero who moved in their world and spoke their jive. It now seems very much of its time (soul soundtrack, blur-focus fades) but it does have narrative drive and keeps within its semi-realistic bounds right up to the dénouement. The sequels were more diffuse.
