While there was nothing new in the idea of the unschooled getting mixed up with ruthless criminals, the blend of horror film elements with the homegrown studenty setting lent a refreshing, disturbing piquancy to the movie: it was a big commercial success of its year and launched its stars on busy careers (though Fox's quickly fizzled). Though filming took place on location in and around Edinburgh, the flat was entirely achieved through handbuilt sets.
