Shame (2011)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: DeLuxe/2.35:1 101m
Director: Steve McQueen
Cast: Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, Nicole Beharie

Synopsis:

Brandon works for a New York firm, has an apartment to himself, and spends his available hours linked to online porn sites, visiting hookers or just jerking off in the office toilets. Then into his life, in spite of her unanswered phone calls, comes his singer sister, unstable and needy, and his life takes a subtle change in direction.

Review:

Like Hunger, this is a case study in self-destruction, acted out before the unwavering gaze of the camera, with Sibelian strings providing intense, ruminative backing. It is when the protagonist makes a token attempt at striking up an actual relationship with someone he will have to see again, that we begin to see the gaps in the psyche of this sexually athletic, passively attractive young man. The film leaves his pathology unresolved, though he has had a knock and there is room for optimism in the final shot, even if it manages to be saddening at the same time.
