Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Country: GB/FR/US
Technical: col/2.35:1 99m
Director: Edgar Wright
Cast: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Kate Ashfield, Lucy Davis, Penelope Wilton, Bill Nighy
Synopsis:
London: Shaun lives with his childhood friend, an unemployed neanderthal whose limited cultural horizons and slovenly lifestyle threaten to break up Shaun's relationships with his girlfriend and other housemate. However, when the capital is afflicted with a zombie epidemic the pair of them swing into action and head for the pub.
Review:
Not the first zombie spoof - arguably very few living dead pics take themselves seriously - but probably the least assuming. The early scenes, such as the one in which Shaun visits the corner shop and fails to notice the lumbering forms, are particularly effective in evoking a very British nonchalance. There is little science to explain what is happening, though an oblique reference to GM crops occurs early on. As the scenario boils down to an Assault on Precinct 13 situation at the pub, the film's twin hats of toothless spoof and genuine horror exchange places with disarming regularity.
