Shirley Valentine (1989)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 108m
Director: Lewis Gilbert
Cast: Pauline Collins, Tom Conti, Bernard Hill, Alison Steadman

Synopsis:

A housewife whose self-esteem has been crushed by years of under-achievement through school and marriage goes on holiday to Mykonos with a friend and rediscovers herself.

Review:

A difficult film to synopsize without making it sound trite, though there is definitely something tried and true about a tale that brought would-be Shirleys out in their droves to visit the cinema for the first time in years. The freshness is in the handling, of course, and Russell's script has a cracking line every minute (and one or two duds), while Collins, who has honed her performance to perfection doing the part on stage, makes the most genial of guides through this cornucopia of life's great truths. Gilbert sits back discreetly and lets the two of them shine.
