Sin City (2005)
Country: US
Technical: DeLuxe 124m
Director: Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez
Cast: Jessica Alba, Devon Aoki, Alexis Bledel, Powers Boothe, Rosario Dawson, Benicio Del Toro, Carla Gugino, Josh Hartnett, Rutger Hauer, Jaime King, Michael Madsen, Brittany Murphy, Clive Owen, Mickey Rourke, Nick Stahl, Bruce Willis, Elijah Wood
Synopsis:
In an interrelated series of tales a succession of tough guys guard the women of Basin City against the forces of darkness.
Review:
Welcome to the topsy-turvy moral universe of graphic novelist Frank Miller, wherein the cops are expendable or corrupt, the clergy is psychotic and the politicians, well, can't you guess? The guys we are supposed to be rooting for, meanwhile, are a maverick cop and a pair of convicted killers - but it's alright because they abhor violence done to women. And plenty of it is done, too. Put together rather in the manner of a Dick Tracy, but in black and white predominantly rather than bold primary colours, the film is a visual feast, with some fabulously contrasty black and white photography and splashes of colour tellingly daubed on digitally where appropriate. As for providing food for the mind, however, it is a desert.
