Sissi: The Fateful Years of an Empress (1957)
(Sissi - Schicksalsjahre einer Kaiserin)
Country: ST
Technical: col 109m
Director: Ernst Marischka
Cast: Romy Schneider, Karlheinz Böhm, Magda Schneider
Synopsis:
Both Sissi and her husband the emperor, Franz, receive declarations of love while she is away visiting Hungary, but are no sooner reunited than she is diagnosed with a fatal chest condition and sent to Madeira to convalesce.
Review:
Picture-book romance for those with a penchant for viewing history from the perspective of the aristos. Thus preoccupations abound concerning the empress's health, the emperor's renunciation of personal happiness for national duty, and even the philanderings of a colonel in the empress's retinue as she moves from one exotic location to another. Production values are lavish enough, give or take the odd studio backdrop, with lavish costumes and plenty of extras in the scenes at La Scala and Venice. In short, definitely for adherents of the saga only.
