Sister (2012)

(L'enfant d'en haut)

Country: SW/FR
Technical: col 97m
Director: Ursula Meier
Cast: Léa Seydoux, Kacey Mottet Klein, Martin Compston, Gillian Anderson

Synopsis:

A Swiss boy spends his days stealing ski equipment on the slopes, and selling it to whomever he can to provide food for his sister and himself. Far older than he is, she has a string of jobs and boyfriends and seems to unable to articulate either guilt or gratitude for the sacrifices he makes.

Review:

Aside from the one twist two thirds of the way through, Meier's film offers little in the way of relief or variation from the repetitive scenes of theft and fencing of stolen goods. Exploring one likely outcome of the 'fille-mère's predicament in a libertarian but materialist society, the director neglects to clarify how they pay the rent, or where the boy is supposed to be at school; social services and the police are never called upon. In the end the pair's dysfunctionality leads to loss of viewer patience, notwithstanding the undeniable conviction they throw into their roles.
