Skyscraper (2018)
Country: US
Technical: col/2.39:1 102m
Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Neve Campbell, Chin Han, Roland Møller, Noah Taylor
Synopsis:
After losing a leg in a hostage situation that went wrong, former SWAT team commander Will Sawyer has turned security and fire expert from behind a computer. In such a capacity is he hired by a Hong Kong plutocrat to give his vanity project, the tallest building in the world, a seal of approval.
Review:
Take the professional who lost a civilian on his watch from Cliffhanger, add the location, hijack and fly in the ointment setup from Die Hard, then top it off with Johnson as one-man rescue mission from San Andreas: film making by numbers as cynical as it gets. No matter, if you need a man to climb a crane one and a half times the height of the Empire State Building without a ladder, or lose his leg three times and just pop it back on, Johnson's your man. Quite the silliest piece of popcorn in some time, this even misses an opportunity by failing to make an asset of its Hong Kong cast, who are mostly consigned to watching the proceedings on large display screens. Poor devils.
