Synopsis:
The village of Trefeurig in mid Wales is observed through the seasons by the son of Jewish refugees who settled there during the war. We see the farming practices, the various village contests, the visits of the mobile library and reaction to plans to close the village school.
Review:
The latter is the one sign we have - that and the advanced age of most of the inhabitants - that the days are numbered for community life, but the closing shots leave us in no doubt, with their mouldering farm buildings and auctioned equipment. The lack of both a central focus (the director's mother plays a strong role, though for reasons never actually explained) and a guiding commentary, together with a very static camera and a Bruno Dumont approach to shot length, make this a fairly tough prospect for most audiences, who may well find the title, in fact based on Noam Chomsky's illustrative non-sentence, 'colourless green ideas sleep furiously', invitation - or warning - enough.
