Small Soldiers (1998)
Country: US
Technical: Technicolor/Panavision 110m
Director: Joe Dante
Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Gregory Smith, Jay Mohr, Frank Langella (voice), Tommy Lee Jones (voice)
Synopsis:
Toy manufacturers create toys using Defence microchips and before they know it their Commando Elite are declaring war on human 'allies' of their enemies the Gorgonites.
Review:
Gremlins meet Toy Story, one might cynically observe, but this is kid's stuff with enough jokes to please the adult viewers, especially the film buffs (Patton and other war movies, Bride of Frankenstein). It is a nice touch to have the Lovecraftian monsters as the good guys, but Men in Black prepared us for that too. And any boy who's played with Action Man will find the devilish commandos irresistible, their leader voiced by Jones. As usual one has to suspend a large chunk of disbelief and swallow the moral about standing up for yourself and fighting for what you can't see, but the special effects go a long way towards imposing Dante's illusion on the viewer.
