Snowden (2016)
Country: FR/GER/US
Technical: col/2.35:1 134m
Director: Oliver Stone
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Rhys Ifans, Zachary Quinto, Nicolas Cage
Synopsis:
The story of Edward Snowden, who spent nine years working directly or indirectly with National Security computer systems, and then blew the whistle on generalised state tapping of private telecommunications.
Review:
A predictable subject for Stone draws relatively calm cinematic treatment, and this is part of the problem: there just aren't enough thrills for the running time. That said, the film-making is never less than consistent with what we have come to expect from a master technician, and the script is sufficiently meaty to occupy the intellect, until the over-preachy conclusion, that is. The standout performance is actually that of Rhys Ifans, who demonstrates, as if there could never been any doubt of the matter, that he can do quiet menace and an American accent in a suit as well as J. K. Simmons and the rest of them.
