Solomon Kane (2009)
Country: FR/CZ/GB
Technical: col/2.35:1 104m
Director: Michael J. Bassett
Cast: James Purefoy, Pete Postlethwaite, Alice Krige, Rachel Hurd-Wood, Jason Flemyng, Max von Sydow, Mackenzie Crook
Synopsis:
At the turn of the seventeenth century a mercenary-cum-adventurer escapes eternal damnation and returns to England. However, his stay of execution will last only so long as he adheres to the path of righteous non-violence, and the land is awash with raiders under the command of the sorcerer, Malachi.
Review:
Woefully unhistorical tosh, positing a completely lawless west country, and pilgrims already on their way to the New World. Still, it is only meant to be comic book fun and there is no shortage of swordplay and head-lopping. Purefoy makes for a rugged hero, of somewhat limited range but that is okay, and the wintry cinematography with bleached out colour and almost perpetual rain works a treat.
