So Long, My Son (2019)
(Di jiu tianchang)
Country: CHI
Technical: col/1.78:1 185m
Director: Xiaoshuai Wang
Cast: Jingchun Wang, Mei Yong, Xi Qi, Roy Wang, Jiang Du
Synopsis:
In 1980s China, a worker couple suffer doubly under the nation's one child policy when their son is drowned in an accident.
Review:
Banal plotting is spiced up with impossibly jumbled chronology and hard to tell apart characters, so that the editing at times works against the viewer's empathy. A deadeningly slow pace also does not help, even as there is much to praise in the cinematography, direction and performances.
