Sonatine (1993)
Country: JAP
Technical: col 93m
Director: Takeshi Kitano
Cast: 'Beat' Takeshi, Aya Kokumai, Tetsu Watanabe
Synopsis:
A Tokyo yakuza is sent with some of his men to settle a gangland dispute in Okinawa, but it is merely a ruse to get him out of the way and take over his profitable patch.
Review:
Slow, whimsical gangster pic consisting for the most part of a playful interlude on the beach, from which the spectre of violence is never long absent. Typical of its creator's genre of world-weary romantic antiheroes making their enigmatic progress towards death, it erupts without warning into slaughter and is not always easy to follow.
