Sound of Metal (2019)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.39:1 120m
Director: Darius Marder
Cast: Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke, Paul Raci, Mathieu Amalric

Synopsis:

A thrash metal drummer on tour with his girlfriend experiences sudden and debilitating hearing loss. In spite of useful time spent at a retreat for the deaf, he persists in opting for implant surgery in the hope of reversing the deficiency, but the procedure only worsens his feelings of isolation.

Review:

Well-meaning, slow-moving disability drama, which attracted all manner of garlands on release for its lead actor's characteristic death stare performance, though the principal achievement would seem to be in the realm of sound design. The latter thankfully shifts between subjective and objective soundscapes, but is very effective at communicating the reality of life with impaired hearing.
