Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 139m
Director: Sam Raimi
Cast: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Thomas Haden Church, Topher Grace
Synopsis:
Still smarting from the death of his uncle, Peter Parker does battle with both his vanity and a desire for vengeance. Meanwhile the killer is transformed into the Sandman when he strays into a research facility, Parker's childhood friend, the Goblin's son, is after his own revenge, and Mary Jane's career stalls along with their relationship.
Review:
In its attempt not to be just another face-off between Spider-Man and megalomaniac villain, this flabby, multi-stranded effort feels like a second-parter, marking time between opening and closing instalments. What's more, the plotting remains formulaic, flirting with the dark side of the Star Wars films, and full of sage reflections on vengeance and forgiveness that we have heard countless times before and always worked better in Westerns anyway. What we have at one point is a variant on Jekyll and Hyde, with the faintly embarrassing spectacle of Maguire strutting and dancing along Fifth Avenue, eyeballing the chicks.
