Spione (1928)
(Spies)
Country: GER
Technical: bw 144m silent
Director: Fritz Lang
Cast: Rudolf Klein-Rogge, Gerda Maurus, Lien Deyers, Willy Fritsch
Synopsis:
A master criminal uses his bank as a front for blackmail and extortion, but when one of his spies falls in love with a government agent, his plan to steal a vital East-West treaty falters.
Review:
Lang foresaw it all, from Hitchcock to From Russia with Love in the present case! And this movie has it all: a suave, cocky hero and exotic blonde heroine, a wheelchair-bound villain, a boxing match doubling as ballroom, a train smash in a tunnel, a Japanese dignitary committing seppuku for having succumbed to a sultry vamp, and a climactic race against time through a bank filling with gas. It looks a treat, too, after a miracle of restoration brought it back to public view in the early 2000s.
