Squid Game (2021)

£0.00

(Ojing-eo geim)

Country: KOR
Technical: col/2.00:1 TV series (10x55m)
Director: Hwang Dong-hyuk
Cast: Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Hoyeon, Oh Yeong-su

Synopsis:

Various debtors and down-and-outs are manipulated by an entertainment conglomerate into taking part in a series of elimination bouts based on childhood games. The stakes are high indeed, and there is no escape. Meanwhile among their captors is an undercover cop.

Review:

Taking the story premise of Battle Royale, together with the underclass theme of Parasite, Dong-hyuk's screenplay rings the changes on human behaviour in extremis like no other. Wrong-footing its audience as often as its characters, it even convinces us that having once been released they might voluntarily return, so dire are the straits to which the injustices of modern living have condemned them. The production is brilliantly fit for purpose and the performances made more than one of the leads into a household name.
