Stanley and Livingstone (1939)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 101m
Director: Henry King
Cast: Spencer Tracy, Cedric Hardwicke, Richard Greene, Nancy Kelly, Walter Brennan

Synopsis:

American newspaperman, Henry Stanley, is financed by his editor for an expedition from Zanzibar to the source of the Congo river to find traces of the missionary, David Livingstone, from whom nothing has been heard for some time.

Review:

A romanticized slice of Hollywood history, which not least would have us believe that Stanley succeeded his friend as medicine toting missionary. Nevertheless, King was a great outdoor director, and Fox wisely financed the use of Kenyan locations shot by Otto Brower. The result is an all-round solidly crafted piece of historic narrative, with memorable performances in the title roles.
