Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 133m
Director: George Lucas
Cast: Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman
Synopsis:
The Trade Federation forms an alliance with some evil Sith personage and blockades the planet Naboo, after which it launches a full-scale invasion. Two Jedi knights, sent to broker a deal, end up rescuing the Queen and taking her to Tatooine, where they discover a boy slave with prodigious talents...
Review:
For a film which not only heralds a new trilogy but must also contextualize in some way the entire saga this is not a bad effort. The dialogue is as cheesy as ever, but it rips along at a fair old pace while introducing a mass of information and characters, some of whom, it must be said, sound as though they have been conceived according to racial types (negro for comic relief, jewish for wily dealing, asiatic for snivelly opportunism). The visuals and action highlights are foregrounded in preference to human interest.
