St Martin's Lane (1938)
(Sidewalks of London)
Country: GB
Technical: bw 85m
Director: Tim Whelan
Cast: Charles Laughton, Vivien Leigh, Rex Harrison
Synopsis:
A street performer, a lady pickpocket-cum-dancer and a theatre patron are three personalities whose lives intertwine in London's bustling theatreland.
Review:
Ironically, something of a farewell to London for its two leads (Harrison would wait until after the war to be embraced by Hollywood), this is an English equivalent of one of those chorus girl musicals Warners was doing a few years before. Fresh-faced and lively playing, but not much London atmosphere (it was shot in the studio).
