Strange Days (1995)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 145m
Director: Kathryn Bigelow
Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Angela Bassett, Juliette Lewis, Tom Sizemore

Synopsis:

In the closing days of the millenium Los Angeles is a powder keg of civil unrest, and citizens escape the dreariness of existence through a brain-scanning video experience called Playback. An ex-cop who now peddles the stuff, and his chauffeur friend, uncover a murder by police officers of a black popular figure.

Review:

Massively overlong science fiction which is really the same old story of police corruption and best buddy betrayal we have seen many times before. The moral implications of the new technology are economically pointed up and it becomes another demonstration that its director can turn out violent, glossy entertainments to match her most macho male competitors, while innovatively having a weak hero who ends up in a clinch with his black female rescuer. A daring and visceral piece of mainstream film-making.
