Strayed (2003)
(Les égarés)
Country: FR/GB
Technical: col 95m
Director: André Téchiné
Cast: Emmanuelle Béart, Gaspard Ulliel
Synopsis:
Shortly after the overrunning of the French armed forces in May 1940, a schoolteacher and her two children flee southwards from Paris like many others and are bombed by a German plane. They escape thanks to the resourcefulness of a young savage who helps them occupy an abandoned house and keeps them supplied with food. Slowly the mistrust of the mother gives way to more complex feelings as she comes to terms with the overturning of her world view.
Review:
Uneasy character piece in which the relationships of the mother, son and outsider are constantly shifting and it is the arrival of a second group of outsiders that provides the catalyst for the dénouement. The film keeps one guessing and never conforms to expectations - thankfully: in the hands of a Haneke it could have turned as nasty as it promises to do. There is a lushness to the summer photography that belies the mess going on in the outside world.
