Sully (2016)
(Sully: Miracle on the Hudson)
Country: US
Technical: col/2.39:1 96m
Director: Clint Eastwood
Cast: Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney
Synopsis:
The pilot of a domestic flight loses both engines directly after take-off from La Guardia, but instead of turning back ditches in the Hudson, a decision he must spend several days defending before being vindicated by the Air Safety investigation.
Review:
One of a line of hero/underdog portraits the director leant towards in his late career flurry of activity behind the camera, this is also one of his more concise films. Witnessing the incident as we do from three different perspectives - Sully's nightmare of what might have happened, his own skewed, traumatising experience of the events, and a more objective reconstruction through the flight recorder - we appreciate anew Eastwood's storytelling flair, as well as his Fordian sentimentality (there are only good Americans here, even among those seeking to find fault). Hanks strides (metaphorically) through proceedings, a true pro tormented by self-doubt and naturally viewing all the publicity with distaste, meanwhile adding another great role to his gallery of everymen.
