Summertime (1955)

(Summer Madness)

Country: GB/US
Technical: col 99m
Director: David Lean
Cast: Katharine Hepburn, Rossano Brazzi, Isa Miranda, Darren McGavin

Synopsis:

An American spinster holidays in Venice and meets a dashing Italian man with whom she falls in love. The only problem is that he is married.

Review:

It was rare at the time for the cinema to handle middle-aged love, especially where the woman was ten years the senior. Lean's last small subject before opting for the grand canvas is part travelogue and part journey inside the head of Hepburn's character, as subtly graded in the latter as it is vibrantly coloured in the former.
