Sunshine (2007)

£0.00

Country: GB/US
Technical: col/2.35:1 107m
Director: Danny Boyle
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh, Cliff Curtis, Mark Strong, Chris Evans

Synopsis:

Astronauts travelling to the Sun some time in the future, to deliver a payload of fissile material designed to reboot the ailing star, changes course to intercept a distress beacon which may be coming from a failed similar mission seven years previously.

Review:

Notwithstanding the hoary old premise about never answering distress calls, and various other Alien-derived elements in the scenario/production design, this is a refreshingly down and dirtily real drama of non-stock types placing themselves in jeopardy. The film looks a treat and the second half is an edge of the seat ride only marred by some loss of clarity over what is going in during the closing stages (the breaking down of the final moment of 'singularity' is foreshadowed). Unusual to have a science-fiction thriller in which acting is more important than special effects.
