Super 8 (2011)
Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 112m
Director: J. J. Abrams
Cast: Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler
Synopsis:
A gang of young movie-makers stumble upon a real-life monster movie when a spectacular train wreck draws an unwelcome military presence into the community.
Review:
Playing like an amalgam of Jaws, The Goonies and E.T., this piece of suburban sci-fi/horror was a bit too gruesome for the kids it was most probably aimed at. Or was it? The film's most effective elements are those centred around the - by 2011 - somewhat recondite activity of Super 8 movie-making, which is obviously as close to Abrams' heart as the Spielberg movies he grew up with. Indeed, it is worth staying for the credits, at which point we are treated to the entire film-within-the-film. In spite of the numerous skated over details, the film above all has a strong sense of the camaraderie among the kids, and that is what will resonate most with viewers, of whatever age.
